Weekly Adventure Series – Hiking Bowen Island

The Weekly Adventure Series Continues…..

Yes that’s right as I mentioned in my previous post I am going 1 local adventure a week as an incentive to explore and blog more. This week’s post highlights hiking Bowen Island. Bowen is only a short ferry ride from Horse Bay which is located in West Vancouver. It’s a perfect day trip from Vancouver as the bus will pick you up right from the centre of downtown and take you to the ferry terminal. For someone like me who doesn’t have a car this is an amazing and accessible trip.

My Hike to The Top of Mt Gardner

Once on the island I enjoyed a smoothie and cookie at the Snug Cove Cafe then took the transit bus to the base of the Mt Gardner trail. The bus driver was super friendly and talkative. This was a contrast to the  bus drivers in the city who are often stoic and don’t care for small talk (there are the exception).  Bowen has a real community feel as it is a small island.  Once off the bus the adventure was on. It took me 3.5 hours to get to the top as I am not the fastest hiker. After taking many a break and getting lost a few time I made it! The panoramic view from the top was well worth the push to get up the mountain.

I Ended My Day of Hiking Bowen Island With A Delicious Meal at Doc Morgans

With weak wobbly knees I proceeded to walk back down the mountain. It took about 2 hours to get back to the bottom and another half hour to get to snug cove. And what is better than ending at day hiking on Bowen Island than rewarding myself with a delicious meal at Doc Morgans. This is one of the  best restaurants on Bowen!  I enjoyed a draft beer and fish and chips with tea and an ice cream sundae for desert. I’d say it was a great day!

Getting to Bowen from Vancouver

On Transit: Take the 257 Horseshoe Bay bus from the city centre. Board at Georgia and Granville on the North side of the street. $1.75 for children and seniors and $2.75 for adults. Go to Translink for info on bus times/fares etc.

By Car: Take Hwy #1 (the highway is outside the city centre) and drive West. It will take you about 30 min from the city depending on traffic. Try not to go during rush hour ( 3-7pm on weekdays). Follow the sign for the ferry terminal. Once there get in the Bowen Island Ferry Line. The ferry cost approx $36/car plus $11.55/person. There is an option to park your car in the lot in Horseshoe Bay for $10 a day. Important! If going on a long weekend of special holiday and taking your car. Book the ferry ahead of time. Go to http://www.bcferries.com for more info.
