Train Travel Across Canada Via Rail

Train travel across Canada is an excellent way to experience this vast and versatile country. Last summer I spent 5 weeks exploring my home country traveling across Canada by train from east to west coast. If you are looking for a great way to see this country and you are not in a hurry taking the train is a great option. You will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other travellers, eat delicious meals on board and see some great views as you traverse the country. I went with Via Rail and had the time of my life! They are the great when it comes to train travel across Canada. Here are some of the highlights of my train travel trip across Canada:

Mix, Mingle and Make Friends and Connections with Other Train Travellers

One of the highlights of my time on the train was meeting some awesome people. You are sharing a small space with several people often for 2 or more days! You see the same people as you move about the train. This is a chance to enjoy some great conversations. There was a couple from Quebec traveling from Toronto to Vancouver (4 days straight on the train) with their 4 children under 10. Their youngest was about a year old. They came equipped with pillows, blankets, their luggage and a cooler full of food. Not to mention they were in economy class! That means no beds, just seats to sleep in. I gave them mad props as its not easy to rough it in economy with 4 young ones. This gave me some inspiration for travel one day with my future family. I had many great conversations with other people especially in the dinning and dome car.

See The Whole Country in A Unique Way

Canada is a big country and has many different and varied landscapes. From rocky coastlines, to miles upon miles of forest and lakes to vast wide open prairie fields and majestic mountain ranges. I loved sitting in the dinning area while eating my dinner and enjoying the beautiful scenary roll by. I also loved being in the dome car and getting a 360 degree view of vast landscape as the train moved along. I feel it was a very unique way to see Canada. One morning I woke up early and made my way to the dome car. I got a glance of the sunrise and the mist on the prairies as we were passing somewhere through the province of Manitoba. It was deep, quiet and beautiful moment for me.

Get on Board for Free if You Are a Musician and Canadian Citizen

The Via Rail Artists on Board Program offers free and reduced fares for Canadian musicians traveling across the country. If you are primarily an acoustic solo or duet act then you can apply. Apply no later than six weeks before your desired departure date. I had the pleasure of listening to a great husband and wife duo onboard while the train traveled through the Rocky Mountains. The duo was traveling across Canada to Toronto. After taking the train they were going to fly to Europe for a tour. It was so cool to connect with them. Their music was lively and fun to clap along and tap your feet too. Some of the kids on board were dancing! It was a blast!

Have An Experience You’ll Never Forget

When I look back on last year my trip across Canada was one of my highlights. Via Rail does its best to make sure you are comfortable, that you are having a good time and the staff are friendly and personable. How many people can say they went across Canada by train? Why not give train travel across Canada a try?  Whether you are visiting from overseas or you’re a born and bred Canadian citizen. Hope on board for the journey of of life time!

Hi Katy, Yes I totally recommend it. You can by a pass that lets you stop off at different cities along the way. I’d love to take the Amtrak Train down the West Coast of the US.

Hey Liz, I know I love train travel. I’d like to do train travel in Europe. I hear Euro Rail is great. There were some delays with Via Rail sometimes but other than that it was great. I will give your post a read.
